Dr. Richard Benson

Richard is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of head and neck cancers, including cancers of the oral cavity, throat and larynx. He has extensive experience in delivering advanced radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy for complex head and neck cancers, working closely within multidisciplinary teams to provide carefully tailored treatment for each patient.

He trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, qualifying in 1988, and completed his specialist oncology training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He further developed his expertise as a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada, one of the world’s leading cancer centres.

Richard was appointed Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Peterborough Hospital in 2000. His clinical and research interests focus on improving the precision and tolerability of radiotherapy for head and neck cancers, with particular attention to reducing treatment-related side effects while maintaining excellent cancer control.

He is actively involved in the education and examination of oncology trainees for the Royal College of Radiologists. In his clinical practice, Richard is known for his patient-centred approach, taking time to explain treatment options clearly and to support patients and their families throughout what can be a challenging treatment journey.
