Mr. David Thurtle

David is a Consultant Urologist based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. His main clinical interests are the management of kidney stone and prostate disease. He specialises in the full range of modern endoscopic treatments, including ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and laser stone surgery, alongside the metabolic investigation and prevention of recurrent stone disease. He has a particular interest in optimising patient pathways and improving outcomes.

In addition to his specialist work in stone disease, David has a broad general urology practice, including the assessment and management of lower urinary tract symptoms in men, haematuria, raised PSA, and other common urological conditions. He offers both medical and surgical treatments for prostate enlargement, with a focus on minimally invasive approaches tailored to individual patient needs.

David qualified from the University of Nottingham and completed his urological training in the East of England. During his training, he developed a strong interest in prostate cancer diagnostics, endourology and stone disease, including experience in high-volume centres. He has also spent time working internationally, including a year in New Zealand, gaining experience in different healthcare systems and approaches to urological care.

He is actively involved in research and quality improvement. He completed a research doctorate on non-metastatic prostate cancer in 2022 at The University of Cambridge, for which he won the award for best Doctor of Medicine Thesis across the University. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and contributes to national discussions on improving care pathways for patients. 

David is committed to education and training. He teaches medical students and urology trainees both locally, and nationally, and is involved in developing postgraduate education within the East of England. He has published textbooks on Emergency Urology, contributed textbook chapters on prostate and stone disease, and is developing a series of patient-focussed books.

He is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) and the European Association of Urology (EAU), and contributes to national and international meetings in the field of endourology.
