Mr. Oliver Wiseman
Consultant Overview
Oliver is a Consultant Urologist based at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge where his main interests are in the management of urinary stone disease and the treatment of men with infertility.
He specialises in the treatment of kidney stones, including use of the different lasers to treat kidney stones, the metabolic investigation of patients with kidney stones, and in the minimally invasive management of patients with upper tract transitional cell cancer (TCC). As part of his interest in the management of male infertility, he works together with Bourn Hall Clinic, the world famous infertility clinic, and Cambridge IVF, to offer men with fertility problems appropriate treatment. He was the first person in the East of England to undertake microTESE (microsurgical testicular sperm extraction) for men with non-obstructive azoospermia, and he looks after men with fertility concerns from across the East of England (Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire) on the NHS and privately. He has almost 15 years of experience in undertaking microTESE, and has performed over 1000 fertility operations (microTESE / PESA / TESE and microsurgical vasectomy reversal). He also sees patients with general urological problems.
Oliver qualified from The University of Cambridge and following basic surgical training he undertook a period of research in London. He then underwent specialist training in urology on the North London rotation, including at Guys Hospital and UCLH (“The Institute of Urology”). He has published widely including articles relating to the management of patients with renal stone disease, bladder function, prostate surgery, and erectile dysfunction. He is widely published in medical journals, and has written articles for GP journals, and chapters in text books.
Oliver has been the Training Programme Director for urology registrars in the East of England and is actively involved in training medical students in Cambridge. He also runs national training courses teaching other urologists how to perform surgery for patients with renal stones, and has been the organiser of training courses in male fertility. He regularly welcomes other surgeons from the UK and overseas to observe surgery, and is at the forefront of introducing new techniques for his patients, with the introduction of supine PCNL (surgery to remove large kidney stones), and PCNL where smaller incisions are made. He is one of the first surgeons in the UK to have introduced these new techniques.
Over the past few years Oliver has been invited to speak or operate at national and international conferences on kidney stone surgery and male infertility. These have included The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Annual Meeting, The European Association of Urology Annual Meeting, and the International Congress of Endourology. Previously he has spoken on male infertility at The British Fertility Society Study Days and the MENA Obs and Gynae Congress in Dubai. Additionally he has run workshops at some of these meetings teaching surgical techniques, and has taught at many other local and regional meetings across the UK. As of Summer 2021 until 2024 he was the Course Leader for the EndoUrological Society Course “Tips and Tricks in PCNL” which was held at the World Congress of EndoUrology Annual Meeting, and is faculty on the European Association of Urology Annual Teaching Course of “The Metabolic Management of Kidney Stones”. He hosted the TALENTS meeting in 2024 in Cambridge, and the SCOPE meeting in 2025.
Oliver has been a Trustee of The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), is a previous treasurer of BAUS, an ex-council member of BAUS, has been on BAUS Section of Endourology, and a Committee member of The BAUS Research and Audit Committee. He is a member of the BAUS Sections of Endourology and Andrology and was the treasurer and on the organising committee for the World Congress of Endourology which was held in London in 2015. More recently he has been on the Awards Committee of the EndoUrological Society, the largest global society dedicated to endourology and stone disease, and is also a board member of the European Association of Urology Endourology Section. In 2017 he was awarded the Karl Storz Harold Hopkins Golden telescope by BAUS, an award which recognises excellence in young urologists. He has also been awarded the BAUS Karl Storz Silver Cystoscope, which recognises excellence in training and teaching other urologists.
